FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
PRESTIGE LASER CLEANING
Laser cleaning is an advanced, non-contact surface preparation method that uses concentrated laser energy to remove contaminants such as rust, paint, carbon deposits and grime. By carefully controlling the laser parameters, unwanted material can be removed with minimal effect on the underlying surface.
Our pulsed laser directs short bursts of concentrated light energy onto the contaminated surface. Materials such as rust, paint, carbon and other coatings absorb the laser energy and are rapidly removed through a process known as ablation. Depending on the application, appropriate extraction can be used to capture airborne particles and residues. Laser settings can be adjusted according to the material, contaminant and desired result.
Laser cleaning can be used to remove a wide range of contaminants, including rust, surface scale, grease, baked-on oil, selected paints and coatings, carbon deposits and some biological growth. Suitable materials can include steel, cast iron, aluminium, brass, copper, stone, brick, concrete and selected timbers. Every application is different, so we assess the material and contaminant before commencing work.
Laser cleaning is a non-abrasive cleaning process that does not use blasting media such as sand, glass beads or other abrasive materials. This can be particularly useful when working with detailed components, delicate surfaces or applications where avoiding abrasive media is important. Laser cleaning also produces no spent blasting media, which can reduce clean-up and waste. The most suitable method depends on the material, contaminant, surface area and desired result.
Laser cleaning can reduce the use of abrasive media, water and chemical cleaning products compared with some traditional cleaning methods. The process itself does not require blasting media or chemical stripping agents, which can help reduce secondary waste. Removed contaminants still need to be appropriately captured, handled and disposed of depending on the material being removed.
Laser cleaning is highly controllable, but the correct settings are important. Different materials and contaminants require different laser parameters, and incorrect settings can affect the underlying surface. We assess the material and application before cleaning and adjust the laser parameters accordingly. Where appropriate, we can carry out a test area first to confirm the desired result before proceeding with the full job.
High-powered laser cleaning equipment requires appropriate safety controls and a controlled work area. For on-site work, we assess the environment and use appropriate laser safety measures, barriers or screening, PPE and controlled access where required. Safety requirements can vary depending on the equipment, work area and application, so each job is assessed before cleaning begins.
Different laser systems are suited to different cleaning applications. Prestige Laser Cleaning currently specialises in pulsed fibre laser cleaning, which provides precise control for applications such as rust removal, automotive components, paint and coating removal, restoration and precision cleaning. As our equipment and capabilities expand, we may introduce additional laser technologies for specialised applications.
Yes. Our mobile laser cleaning equipment allows us to travel to your garage, workshop, commercial site or other suitable location. For jobs where on-site cleaning isn't practical, parts and smaller items can be brought to our workshop in Geelong, Victoria. If suitable electrical power isn't available at your location, let us know when requesting a quote so we can discuss the available options.
The cost of laser cleaning depends on the material, contaminant, size and condition of the item, the level of cleaning required and whether the job is completed on-site or at our Geelong workshop. For a more accurate quote, send us a description and a few clear photos of the item or surface you would like cleaned.
